Hello, my name is Deirdre Barry. Welcome to my website about play therapy.

Why Play Therapy?

Children naturally express themselves through play just as adults express themselves verbally. It is through play that children learn and make sense of their world.

How does play therapy work?

The therapist creates a safe environment which allows the child to feel secure and supported. In turn this allows the child to express difficult feelings, memories and fears, so the child can establish new ways of coping and feeling.

Who is play therapy suitable for?

Play therapy is suitable for children between the ages of 4 and 14 years who:

  • Have nightmares or disturbed sleep
  • May be dealing with parental conflict because of separation/divorce
  • Bully others or are bullied themselves
  • Are adopted or fostered
  • Experience emotional or behavioural difficulties
  • Are not realising their full potential academically or socially
  • Have been hospitalised
  • Suffer from anxiety
  • Have suffered loss and bereavement
  •  May have suffered emotional, physical or sexual abuse

What are the benefits of Play Therapy?

  •  Helps the child to develop new coping skills
  •  It encourages confidence in children
  •  It helps children deal with past traumas
  •  It fosters imagination and creativity
  •  Lessens anxieties
  •  Play allows children to develop stronger relationships with their carers
  •  Play therapy facilities the child in their learning
